Christian Groups Boycott Atheist “The Golden Compass”

Christian groups are boycotting and staging a campaign against the Nicole Kidman movie "The Golden Compass" due to the book's anti-God themes.

The film is based on a trilogy of books by Philip Pullman who is a known atheist. New Line has watered down the film version and removed all the offensive anti-religion themes, which has angered Atheists.

Christian and Catholic groups are more concerned with the books and feel that with the movie will send children running to read the rest of the books. In the final book of the trilogy, a character named God is killed. They find out that God isn't a God after all and is a phony.

The watered down version comes out this Christmas. Atheists are still happy about the film, because it will give his books the attention they never got in the States.

The head of the Freedom From Religion Foundation said, "What this book is about is casting off Church authority. I think it's very, very positive. There should be something for freethinking children. It's a very good yarn."

Read Nicole Kidman’s “The Golden Compass to Bomb

I don't think christian groups should be so angry about something not directly anti-christian. They've had more than their fair share of christian themed movies lately. Look at Narnia for example. It's pure christian allegory. However, there were no athiest groups boycotting it. Lighten up.

I think the problem is that they "dumbed down" the movie so it does not appear anti-Christian. This leads to children flocking to read the trilogy. The trilogy has very strong anti-religious and anti-God themes. I think stealth campaigns directed toward children are offensive. I personally do not care for organized religion, but it find disturbing that our children are being fed this religious/political propaganda from Hollywood. At least with Narnia, everyone new upfront it is christian allegory, there was nothing hidden about that.

I had no idea the Nardia was a Christian allegory or perhaps more accurately said, a religious allegory.
But what disturbs me about this and many other incidences over the past few years is this, Christians appear to scream loudly when people with different view voice those opinions. They demonize Atheist and suggest they should not be allowed to promote their views about God. I've never seen anybody send out warning that some move or book contains religious ideas. The author is an outspoken Atheist, it's not like he has hidden this.

These are very disturbing times for me. I have never promoted my own religious beliefs, yet suffered listening to other's beliefs being promoted in the media, in my home and on the street. I very much feel a coming time where I could be persecuted for my beliefs.

THE WRITER IS NOT AN ATHEIST, TO BE AN ATHEIST, YOU BELIEVE IN NOTHING AS A HIGHER BEING. Mr Pullman STATED HE CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT SPIRIT AND SPIRITUAL MEANS BUT HE KNOWS WHAT DEMONS ARE. THE THING THAT STOOD OUT TO ME WAS THE FACT THAT HE KNOWS THE DEMONS AND SATAN BUT NOT GOD. HE IS NOT A TRUE ATHEIST HE BELIEVES IN SATAN. I KNOW MANY ATHEIST PEOPLE AND ALL OF THEM DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD OR SATAN.
THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS MOVIE AND BOOKS IS TO GET CHILDREN TO NOT BELIEVE IN ANYTHING AND BE ATHEIST AS THEY GROW UP. IF YOU LOOK AROUND MORE AND MORE CHILDREN ARE BECOMING ATHEIST WITHOUT HELP OF ANY MOVIE. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN THAT WERE RAISED IN A CHRISTIAN HOME AND BOTH BELIEVE IN NO HIGHER BEING. I DON'T HOLD THIS AGAINST THEM NOR DO I PRESS MY BELIEFS ON THEM. I PRAY FOR THEM.
I ALSO AGREE WITH SOME OF THE THINGS OTHER PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT THE CHRISTIANS HAVING THE MOST BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS. RELIGION AND HAVING FAITH IN ONE HIGHER BEING HAS COST MANY LIVES THROUGH THE YEARS, BUT, MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER. ALL DIFFERENT FAITHS ARE REALLY THE SAME, JUST WITH DIFFERENT NAMES AND CUSTOMS. 87% OF THIS WORLD BELIEVE IN A HIGHER BEING AND THATS 87% THAT KNOW SOMETHING THAT THE OTHER 13% DON'T.

I am glad you're not my parents.

For one thing, why would atheists have any reason to boycott Narnia? Never one time in any of the Narnia books does it mention God's name or make reference to God. It is purely allegorical. The movie is the same. Now, take in to account that many Christians believe that C.S. Lewis is using Aslan as a Christ-figure, although Lewis still never makes reference to God or Jesus. However, in Pullman's last book, he clearly states that his characters succeed in "killing" God. If he had used another figure with an entirely different name in place of God, that would be one thing, but he comes right and refers to God as Himself. This is absolutely anti-Christian and Christians have every right to be upset.

It's not what you are for that matters, but more of what you are against. Atheists don't "mind" Christian movies, but when an atheist KILLS God, that's a direct attack against the religion and those who believe in it.

So let me understand ... They are attacking YOU and YOUR god.. But when you say " EVERY ONE that is not a cHRISTIAN is wrong. " so is that not an attack. and think you cHRISTIANS started attacking people FIRST.. REAL BLOOD has been Spilt in the NAME of your gOD jESUS. Think of all the good Christians that killed people during the Holy inquisition.. Followers of Christ started the HOLY WARS .. Christians Stomped on the heads of baby native amercian Indians ( to save money on bullets) Christians have more BLOOD on their hands than nearly any other RELIGION (good thing your godf orgives you for all the horror you and your religon have brought to this world) ... If i were to judge a GOD by the about of blood shed .... i would say it would be a good thing if i could KILL your god. But since there is NO god i can't .. all i can do is live and love. Yes i believe is love. I also believe in HATE and i see good god fearing people like to TEACH Hate (dont Forget the good GOD fearing people that are in the KKK).... No one is attacking you they just choose not to believe in invisible friends.

You sound very bitter. I think it is time you pick up The bible (the true bible KJV) and learn about love, because I am not feeling the love. God doesn't teach us to hate people but rather hate sin. I am sorry that you have gotten the impression that Christians hate so much. So called Christians like many that were in the KKK we not really Christians, but rather power hungry people trying just tried to Justify their actions. Good luck in your search for the truth. I will be glad that we will all stand before a righteous God and finally know the truth some day.

Paul said in the Bible that we are to treat others with "gentleness and with respect" when it comes to spiritual matters. I will not debate your thoughts, nor will I attempt to shovel things down your throat by force. I for one believe in a God who makes thing real to others through his holly spirit. Jesus gave us a command that we are to "let our lights so shine that others may see the spirit of God in us." That does not mean force ourselves on others. Christ and the Father ONLY have the authority to give life, take life, or allow judgement to fall on those who continue to reject the Lord Jesus Christ as the saviour of the world. Now God the Father made us all a free moral agent, and does not force himself on those who reject his love and commandments. As a matter of fact, God rains on the just as well as the unjust. So I say this to those who wish to reject Jesus and his plan of salvation. This is your right! I would rather that you see things differently however I cannot make your decissions for you nor will I attempt to enter into a heated debate over this. I will pray for you, and ask the Lord to make himself real to you. "So that they may believe!!!!"

Sounds like your an atheist you people make me laugh you believe in nothing have nothing to defend yet voice your opinion, interesting I mean why are you speaking at all what in your screwed up mind do you believe in, what evolution maybe you have monkey brains not me and if we evolved then why are monkeys still here when will they change? Or the Big Bang hah what a crock you have a better chance smashing a Rolex watch with a hammer throwing the pieces in the air a couple million times and maybe one of the times it will fall back together and work again hmmm something as complicated as that. One day you will die we all will and we will be judged by the Almnighty King of Kings Jesus Christ and when he turns his face from you and tell you to depart he never knew you, and all light and goodness is taken away from you just go to Hell and burn baby burn and dont feel bad or sorry when its to late. So dont be mad at us "believers" let us defend our invisible friends its called faith to believe in something we havent seen like air we cant see it cant bottle it dont know where it comes from but we feel it we know its there. Good Luck in life you have no salvation... later

Conservatives always like to say "there is no right NOT to be offended". Time for them to heed their own advice. These Christian groups need to grow a thicker skin.

We can't we are spending time trying to have a bigger heart and learn how to love you all inspite of your anger, because you don't know how to love

Christians these days (and come to think of it, for the past thousand years) have a serious problem acknowledging that things not Christian have even the right to exist. At least I know now that I can go to the theater without being jostled by bible-thumpers.

This isn't anti-Christian, it's anti-GOD...Jesus isn't being killed in this movie, its GOD. Followers of Christ shouldn't be the only ones offended, this should offend anyone who has a belief in a higher power whether He is called God, Yaweh (sp? sorry), Allah, etc. This should offend Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike.

In all fairness I am not walking around with my bible under my arm the whole time, but I do have a problem having children exposed to something that might encourage violence or more feelings of insecurity. A child feels secure when he is raised in a religion where he can feel that he belongs in today's day and age there is no need to confuse children more where they already come from a broken home or a family more intent on having a career and the material aspects than a family life. Showing this movie to children might encourage feelings where they feel unsafe because the God he knows and trusts and which is there to protect him can be killed? People who call themselves liberals sometimes just hide the fact that they are lazy and insecure in themselves therefore they encourage free thinking because that way other people think for them and give them opinions that they can use for themselves. Satanism or the practise or insinuation of anything satanic should be totally banned, whereas other religions still uphold themselves and they can be proud and upstanding citizens as they do not believe in the absolute cruel and ridiculous practises that goes hand in hand with satanism. I will actively go against this movie with all I have.
Feel absolutely free to criticize.

Couldn't have put that better myself. I admire your courage, thank you for upholding morality.

AMEN! Nicely put!!

God isn't real. This is just a statement. Does it mean that I really believe this? If were yes, that's still ok, the constitution says I am allowed to believe in any religion I want. Opinions are important but so is common sense. This book is fictional and if people can't understand that, I do agree that their children might not fully understand difference of opinions. So, are we going to start burning books now? I have hoped we as people have come farther than this.

RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IS WRONG. TO SHOVE THIS SATANIST MOVE AND BOOKS TO CHILDREN IS WRONG. ITS FINE TO BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANT BUT ITS WRONG TO PUSH THIS ON TO CHILDREN. THIS IS A VERY ENLIGHTENED WORLD WE LIVE IN AND TO THINK ONE MAN CAN TRY SO HARD TO MAKE OUR CHILDREN THE TARGET OF SUCH SATANISTS BELIEFS IS WRONG WITH A CAPITAL "W".
JUST WITH MR PULLMANS INTERVIEWS ANY THINKING PERSON CAN HEAR HE IS A SATANIST AND NOT AN ATHEIST.
TARGET THE ADULTS IF YOU WANT TO HIT HOME YOUR THOUGHTS, BUT OF COURSE THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN SINCE ADULTS HAVE ALREADY MADE THEIR MINDS UP ABOUT THIS MOVIE AND THE WAY WE FEEL ABOUT GOD.

No we are not going to start buring it. We wouldn't spend the money on it. If it makes you feel any better we have come further than this we will continue to decline as a nation and as humans until our God has had enough and then we we will all meet our God. Children will be very confused by this and it will lead a lot of child straight to Hell and I am sorry you think it is ok, but I am guessing when we stand before God you willl change your mind.

so killing God in a fictional story is bad, but killing millions in the name of God in reality isn't?

I am not offended by this author because I am a sinner. Hidden in Christ, we are without offense. I don't deserve life and I cannot take back one awful thing I have ever done. Salvation is for all. But, the one who gets it is the individual who accepts it. Why do we "Christians" feel as though we have to preach condemnation. That is not what Jesus asked us to do. Salt and light. We are warned in Romans ch1-2 that some folks foolishly turned the truth about God into a lie but we are not allowed to condemn, for we are just as guilty of sin as they are. But having been justified, we actually are in a worse state then the lost if we condemn them. If you don't agree with the movie- stay out of the theater and purchase books with your children (start while they are young). God is real and if He had to save you from sin do you honestly think he needs you to prove He exists. He wants us to love him and love our neighbor as ourselves (for some out there I see the problem- self-absorbed/egotistical). He proves he is real in the way we live- it is a revelation to others. The author of the trilogy is what some of you were. Let God work it out for him like he did us. Pray for him .

Freedom is not doing whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. The momentary delight of instant gratification is immature and leads to dysfunction and sadness. Freedom is doing the right thing and using maturity and self-control to live a life of virtue and joy. Can you be truly free if you are not happy?

Don't be too quick to judge this movie. From what I have seen of the previews, it looks like while it may be anti-catholic, it may not be anti-christian. In fact it looks like a quite good epic of good versus evil. Christ told us to come to Him as a child would and that is the approach that the movie takes. Evil becomes those who would beat that free will and inquisitiveness out of us with guilt and innuendo- something that the Catholic church has specialized in over the years, imploring us to trust them, and them only. This is simply not scriptural.

Tired of everyone thinking we Catholics want everyone to be Catholic we are for the most part actually more tolerant of other religions. we are not trying to tell baptist they are going to hell because we believe they are christians also. the only ones i see yelling about someone going to hell is usually some other religious person pointing its finger at us. I have never thought that anyone that's christian has any less chance of going to heaven than i do. I wonder who this person has ever talked to that's Catholic that brow beat them. We are taught (unlilke others) to change peoples mind about God by the way we live our life not how loud we can cry about going to hell. The evil that has been done in Gods name was not God but man and man is not perfect only God. God gave man free will which never promises a good thing since we all sin. Anyway do not throw all of us into one lump sum and judge us as a whole. I do not judge other religions as a whole beyond the point of being happier worshiping God as a catholic I LOVE THE RICH WAYS WE HAVE TO WORSHIP AND THE HISTORY.

"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. "Religion is based . . . mainly on fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race." [Bertrand Russell]

THANK YOU FOR SPOILING THE ENTIRE SERIES. YOU SHOULD HAVE ATLEAST INDICATED A SPOILER WARNING.

It is not a matter of being offended. I have red alot of ugly comments from people who are for this movie, and that is fine. However it is our duty and our right to protect our children. God sent his son to die for our sins. Jesus has already paid the price for all the evil deeds that man has caused throughout history. We are not here to judge no one, I pray that people seek God for knowledge and wisdom. There is enough evil in this world, and we will do whatever it takes to protect our kids, God gave them to us and it is our responsibility, it is enough with what goes on in the real world, we do not need Hollywood or Mr. Pullman creating anymore deception, lies, and evil for his own agenda.

What is the big deal? Is it that the primitive people who continue to embrace Bronze Age science fiction demanding that those irrational and inane beliefs be respected when they are no more real than the Pullman stories are so far emotionally gone that they can't think through this?

Surely everyone knows that gods are invented by human males in their own image to control the population and that religion is the source of immorality.

Children reading books is a very good thing. Adults forcing absurd beliefs that are not true on defenseless children is reprehensible.

I think you all should suspect the Vatican which is a criminal organization that has amassed a fortune on the myth of Christ. It is a homo-bonding culture that is rooted in patriarchal misogyny. Being free of that tyranny can only be a good thing.

This is the most logical post on this story.

You are correct and it is too bad for you and the other post-er that not everything in life is all about Logic. We will see where earthly logic gets us, standing before God some day.

You sound very angry.

I see you have become too intellegent to believe. That is sad, I will pray for you.

I do not agree with this author, nor will I take my children to see his movies or let them read his books. However we can not tell each other how to live thier lives, all we as Christians can do is make the choice that we feel is God like. If you want to protest the movie & books, then educate your friends & co-workers. Tell them what you have heard & learned about this author, but don't add your two sense, just stick to the facts. We are told not to judge. Just pass on the information that you have and let each person make up thier own mind. When the time comes, and we are before our creator he will make the judgement that matters. Stay strong in your faith & know that God is with you, and for those of you that do not believe, I will be praying for you, as should everyone else that believes. PRAYER is a POWERFUL THING!!

Has anyone commenting about the "Golden Compass" in this thread actually read the books?
I would guess not, given the ignorant ramblings many of you are spouting here.
The books are not anti-religious, and it is wrong to portray them as such.
What they are, very plainly, is a kind of fantasy commentary on oppressive theocratic regimes (I.E. when religion -- like anything else -- has too much power, it becomes corrupt).
This is not a statement against religion, but rather against religious tyranny.

Wow, we are at a total of 2 logical posts on this story now. Thank you for asking if anyone bothered to read the books, but I doubt you will get a reply.

Hi there Anonymous,
Yes I have read the books and they are delightful, moving and important. It has been one of the many happy thrills of my life to have seen the 7.5 hr, 2 night production of His Dark Materials which was staged at the National Theatre in London, UK. The plays were incredible and the daemons came to life through exquisite puppetry. I and others sobbed for a long time after leaving the theatre.

Why are modern Americans who do not live in caves still embracing Bronze Age science fiction (bible, torah & quran) as if the mythical characters are real and have any influence over our lives today? The wretched ideologies promoted in those vile books are patriarchal and misogynist. People you all need to grow up intellectually and break free of superstitious brainwashing that keeps your from maturing emotionally. Do you care about dear old Zeus who is no longer top god?

There is no proof of gods, the supernatural or an after life. Clerics have no more right to pontificate on such topics then my cat. Living and loving life realizing that this is it makes it worthwhile. Do no harm to others or their property and stop worrying that some celestial L'll Kim (Jong Il) is watchin and will punish if you fail to grovel before him/it.

Religion is horrid because it it not true and it is dangerous to the good emotional health of the civil society.

For the adults in the room may I recommend Richard Dawkins brilliant work the God Delusion.

I find it so interesting that so many people claim they need to protect their children. I'd love to know what from. Free thinking? Intelligent exploration? If your religion is so fragile - and your children so dim - that they have to be protected from an allegorical tale? Don't you trust those young minds? Or are you worried your brainwashing wont work?

I have no doubt that the kind of Christian parent who would boycott this film and its trilogy spends a great deal of time educating and immersing their children in their Christianity. I also have no doubt that the sort of Christian parent who would boycott this film and its trilogy has a very firm conviction that their beliefs as Christians are irrefutable truth. It surprises me, then, that this sort of Christian parent feels that their children's beliefs and convictions could be endangered by fantasy stories. If Christian parents are doing their job, I daresay it might do their children good to be occasionally exposed to things that challenge their beliefs, especially when the 'offending' message is hidden, as a thoughtful exercise to reinforce their Christian devotion.

Go ahead, boycott 'The Golden Compass' if you want to. But you might be doing your kids a bigger favor by taking them to see the movie, or borrowing the books to read, then afterwards discussing what they find there. Sure, you end up paying a few bucks to the 'enemy' for the lesson, but since your kids will be exposed to anti-Christian messages - some obvious, some subtle - for the rest of their lives, maybe it's better to expose them to one or two of them deliberately while you still have enough parental influence to actively guide them. If this film and its trilogy are particularly insidious, perhaps this is exactly the example to do it with.

Hoo boy, Strwfrawg, you said it best! As a Christian minister I want people to know that numbered among us are some who have no fear of sincere free-thinking people who may disagree about matters of religion and faith. They, like people of faith, have always been around. I hardly know where to begin, but suffice it to say that I think that it is time to recognize the ease with which many pick up the weapons of fear and guilt in order to manipulate and control others. But recognize also that these weapons are not used exclusively by organized religions. For example, they are obviously common in the arsenal of politics, the scientific community, and quite prevalent in the marketplace as well. (What do you think is driving the madness in the insurance, healthcare, and many other industries?)
As for science, I only have a quarrel with those who fail to recognize that it, too, has its dogmas and who fail to recognize how ludicrous it is for today's "scientists" of all people, to purport to have all the answers, as if science has never proven itself wrong on even fundamental suppositions! I once asked an astrophysicist, "What went bang?" (answer: "A quantum singulairty.") I then asked, "Well, what made it go bang?" (answer: "A quantum singulairty." ) These are essentially faith statements to the effect that science teaches that something went "bang" and something" made it go "bang" but what it was is beyond our ability to explain. The "Big Bang" is premised upon a statement of faith.
A God who relies on threats and demagoguery, or alternately, on bribes and cajolery to control subjects, deserves to die. But the God I have come to know and trust has moved beyond that to send a Wayshower to convince us that the way of sacrificial love and compassionate care is an eternal principle that never dies.
As for the critique of "Bronze Age mythologies," it is a matter of how you apprehend truth. Do you use the western enlightenment tools of evidence, proof and facts, or, as the ancients ( and even many cutures today), do you tell a story? I submit that archetypal stories have the capacity to outlive our modernist enlightment mentality.
On a further note, my observation of nature convinces me that death is a fiction; life is an eternal force that is only ever always transformed. There is more to this than a "Beam me up, Scotty" theology; it is universal principle.

He sewed his eyes shut because he was afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease your curiosity
He dreamed a god up and called it Christianity
Your god is dead and no one cares
If there's a hell I'll see you there
He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name
Your god's dead and no one cares
Drowning in his own hypocrisy
And if there is a hell I'll see you there
Burning with your god in humility
Will you die for this?

That having being said, no Atheist would be offended by this. As for Satanism, it has absolutely nothing to do with devil worshiping. Satanism by definition is the worship of the self as the center of your own world. It really makes sense if you think about it, everything in Your life happens from YOUR perspective. You feel YOUR pain, YOUR, pleasure, Youre Happiness etc. Devil worshipers, Totally different than Satanists, are Christian or Jewish at heart for without god there would be no Satan, Period. The fact is that nobody knows what happens when you die. Most people are so terrified of not knowing that they have made up whatever in thier mind to ease that fear. Christianity in my opinion is a great set of morals to live by that was taken way way way to far. In addition to that Christianity is one of the youngest religions recognized by the world. I would have to say that if Christanity was even partially true that they were wong anyways, Jesus was a jew. My suggestion, if you are serious about learning the truth, is to study every religion you can and see what works for you for that is a true faith. Only true faith is real faith. Only one personification of Christianity bothers me. DO NOT FORCE RELIGION ON CHILDREN!!!! weather it be Christianity, Judiasm, Hindu, Taoism, Muslim Etc... IT is wrong, children shouldn't be subjected to anything like that. They should be taught all or nothing at school. Let them make thier own choice when they feel they are ready. Whatever they end up choosing will be a true faith and not just something thats been drilled into thier heads from birth. That is just my opinion though, I consider myself an open-minded person who is willing to look at every situation from every side before making a rash and often poor thought decision based on the 2% of information available to me rather than trying to consider it from all angles. I hope someone finds this opinion helpful.

Believers presuppose the truth of their beliefs - and yet, how can that be true given the thousands of competing and contradictory belief systems. "Thousands" is probably vastly underestimating things, as beliefs are by their nature subjective.
And yet, because they each feel it is true, they conclude they must shove it up other peoples' throats, starting with there children. Seen from a distance, this is so obvious, it's laughable. There is no line between belief and make belief. I prefer good old fiction over olde tyme religion any time. I read Pullman's trilogy while on Harry Potter withdrawal, what a whirlwind ride! Fantastic (that's why we call it fantasy).
