For example, just go to any store that has a self-checkout and watch and see what language almost EVERY mexican, or chicano, chooses. The bottom line is that most of you will not learn the language, and therefore will never assymilate into American society. Which is very very disrespectfull to the American people. And the fact is, they do not want to. This is why the American people are beginning to wake up and realize that many mexicans do not intend to assymilate. Where I live, we have a lot of people from Germany...and they ALWAYS speak their language everywhere they go. Even some of the cashiers speak German. What's the difference between that and someone speaking Spanish??

Being American does not mean that you cannot have a rich heritage or speak multiple languages. My parents brought me to this country from Puerto Rico. They did not speak a word of english but, they learned. At home we were not allowed to speak english at all, only spanish. Therefore, we held on to our natve language and learned english as well. Just because we keep our culture alive and are proud of it does not mean we are less American for it. On the contrary, that rich culture from all over the world is what makes us great. Denying your own people means that she is ashamed of who she is. What she said is very sad. She insulted her origins, her culture and herself. She spoke as if being Hispanic was a negative thing. My mother attempted to go to school many times to learn English but had to quit cuz she was workin in a low pay job up to 60 hours a week soemtimes and on top of that had to care for my two brothers and I. I can't understand what all the fuss is about. I have a mixed heritage, Irish, native american, swedish, german and probably a whole lot more. I call myself american. my immigrant forefathers came here not knowing the language, some were horribly persecuted (irish, NA). But, I suppose that 200 yrs of integrating into society people no longer identify with their country of origin. I have an Irish name, red hair and I don't consider myself irish.
