Tom Petty to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show 2008
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will perform the halftime show at Super Bowl XLII, to be held Feb. 3 at the U. of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Fox made the announcement in its pregame show Sunday.
Petty has a tough act to follow in Prince, who delivered a spectacular set at this year’s NFL championship game, performing classics in the rain. (I don’t remember it raining). Petty won’t have weather to contend with as the stadium is domed.
His music was used last year by the NBA during its playoffs.
Petty and the Heartbreakers represent yet another classic choice for the NFL, which was burned when it attempted to get contemporary with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. Since “nipple-gate,” the NFL has gone with performers with lengthy and established careers who perform catalog hits rather than attempt to introduce songs that are about to be released.
Petty seems like yet another terrible choice. The best halftime show I saw was a mix of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and some Black guy. But then they got sucky when the Superbowl played it safe with Paul McCartney and Prince. And now Petty?? Why not bring Neil Diamond on stage and have Wayne Newton singing with the Muppets?

Only an a-hole that doesn't know anything about top quality American Rock - N- Roll music would say that Tom Tetty sucks. He has had more hits then all of those you mentioned combined! He is a hit machine-- that has stood the test of time!! Oh yeah! AND he writes his own songs!!!!- Unlike the Spoon-fed Pop"Artists"!
P.S.
Stick to "Reporting" the News, your opinions SUCK!!!!
the same from me:
tom petty rocks!!!
i mean the halftime show you mentioned with britney, justin steven tyler and RunDMC, was really hot! maybe the best i have seen in the last 6years, and i also agree that paul mc cartney and prince weren't a good choice for the show.
but tom petty does have a lot of great hits!
just think of "free falling" chanted by 70.000 people in the stadium! :)
by the way, the stones made a good halftime show too!!

Hello Mr. Dave A-Hole,
You don't happen to be over 55 and call anyone under 30 "young whipper snappers," do you?
