Evan Almighty Movie Review

What can I say about Evan AlMighty that won't have already been said by the time you read this...well not much. The one act of random kindness that I can deliver to you, in this spoiler free review is, as a comedy Evan is saccharin instead of sugar, low fat milk instead of regular, the last season of American Idol rather than the first.

We caught Evan at one of the many free pre-screenings that pop up before the release date of a movie so the studio can breed word of mouth and get some reviews generated, normally I wouldn't even mention this boring detail except for the fact that it appears that Evan can't even give away tickets for free, I have never been to a screening that was so poorly attended EVER! Now that could be due to lack of commitment from the PR firm hosting the screening, or maybe people just didn't know it was happening. Whatever the reason our theater was well under half full, strike one against this film and a single frame has yet to grace the screen.

The film opens with a quick hand off from the last "All Mighty" film to the new one. Just to clean the slate, Evan leaves his job, moves out of state, and also leaves any semblance of his character from he last movie behind. I felt that right there was a huge mistake, Carrell's previous character, while being a stiff newsman and huge prick, was a class one scene stealer and he was going head to head with Jim Carrey himself! Strike two and the movie has yet
to really get going, things are looking bad...So after a woefully long credits intro (where the director's name flashed while Evan was praying to God (full of himself much?). The movie pretty much hits the ground running and is in a rush to get to the end of the story...normally this isn't a problem, with movies like Bourne Identity, where you don't know what’s going to happen next it lends to the excitement, however everyone knows the story of Noah, the only sense of wonder comes from exactly how they will do the flood (this
isn't a spoiler, everyone knows there has to be a flood in a story about Noah). This movie is predictable, while still being lightly enjoyable (really, it is only half the calories of a regular comedy).

What does save this film from being a complete waste of time is Carrell's performance (backed up by a good supporting cast with the exception of Goodman, who as they say phoned his part in (I guess he was too busy in his trailer eating), and (ironically) one of the reporters played by Jesse Burch who manages a little scene stealing himself, and the animals...yes of course the animals. I can just see he pitch meeting for this film,

Carrey is out, he wants too much money to make a sequel, well we could use that Steve guy, he's pretty hot now... now? Forty Year Old Virgin came out so long ago those film makers are already cashing in on it with Knocked Up and they DIDN'T use Carrell.

Well we could stick a bunch of animals in it, everyone loves animals...as visions of dollar signs danced in their heads.

Thank God (no pun) for the animals in this picture, even when it drags (which it manages to do in only 90 minutes) at least there are a bunch of cute animals to watch. They probably could have combined this movie with Bay Watch and achieved the same effect, but in a completely different way. I know it sounds like I hated this film, I didn't I laughed a few times and I didn't want to dig my eyes out with a rusty spoon after watching it. This is the perfect movie when you have a mixed group that wants to all go out to the movies together, it offends almost no one and will mildly entertain the whole group.

This review is part of our guest critic section. Each week we (hopefully) will feature a new guest critic either here at 2Snaps or over at our Brotha site HorrorYearbook.com. This week we have the pleasure of having a review from Douggary Grant, the head of Silicon, a horror/sci-fi convention in San jose. Check out Silicon's My Space Here.
